about

The Boneheads group was created in 1962 by Las Vegas trombonist Abe Nole.
The group has gone through several generations of noteworthy players, including Abe Nole, Charlie Loper, Bill Booth, Jim Huntzinger, Carl Fontana, Jim Trimble, Dick McQuary, Bill Rogers, Ralph Pressler and many others.
I was fortunate to play in the third generation of the group between 1979 and 1984 with regulars Jim Trimble, Jim Huntzinger and Carl Fontana down at the Las Vegas Musician's Union hall on Duke Ellington Way. The group eventually stopped rehearsing and ultimately disappeared for about 25 years. In 2007 Ken Hanlon (UNLV) called me to put the group back together for a Jazz Cruise in Los Angeles with trombonist Bob McChesney.
It took us some time to dig up enough of the original charts to be able to play a concert. This kicked off what is now Generation Four of the group and we have been playing concerts locally since about 2011. Many local writers have contributed to the group and we now have over 70 charts in the book.
We realized that other than a few live recordings the group never formally recorded anything, so it was time to do the first CD - 54 years after the inception of the group! I am humbled to be the current curator of a group with such a rich history, and I hope it continues on long past my lifetime so that other generations of trombonists can enjoy these great orchestrations.
